Selected Landmarks
in Zermatt

The Matterhorn
(4’478 m)
The Matterhorn is the world’s most photographed mountain and one of Switzerland’s most significant landmarks. True alpinists continue to consider the Matterhorn to be the mountain of all mountains. Every year, plenty of mountaineers from all over the world attempt the more than challenging ascent of the Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn phenomenon is not just a craze, but an ongoing obsession. The Englishman Edward Whymper, accompanied by the alpine guides Peter Taugwalder & Son, first conquered the Matterhorn on July 14th 1865, but four out of the seven men died in a tragical incidence during the climb down. Until today, rumours are afloat around this terrible drama that earned the small mountain village of Zermatt overnight worldwide fame. Was it an accident or was it murder ? The rope that tore during the descent is the centrepiece of this tragical incidence. It is on display in the Matterhorn Museum.

The Glacier Palace
Welcome in the world's highest glacier palace at a 3'820 m above sea level ! Discover the magical glacier world, real crevasses and amazing ice sculptures at about 15 metres under the glacier’s surface. Free admission.

The Gornergrat :
an unforgettable
excursion
Taking the red cog railway in Zermatt to the Gornergrat (3’089 m) makes for an idyllic excursion, which allows you to admire the amazing view of 29 fourthousand-meter mountains. The train leads through stone pine and larch forests as it arduously winds its way up the mountain. The Matterhorn appears ever more imposing while the village of Zermatt seems to shrink to the size of a doll house. The ride is so enthralling that you won’t even notice that it actually lasted 40 minutes !
